Organic Food Fight
Farmers and their trailers say the proposed standards at the federal level, what is “organic” is a violation of the economic viability of small farms
Don Bustos called a traditional production and regional levels. He grew up on a farm in the Espanola Valley, belonged to its Ur-grandparents. For the past seven years, he has his life in agriculture and for the past three years, he did not use commercial fertilizer, pesticides or herbicides on their crops, instead of fish emulsion and replace the organic fertilizers.
“We first made about three years, over time, my son was born,” says Bustos. “I was really worried about what they eat as a small child.”
If new standards for organic foods is proposed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture are presented in their current form, the economic viability of small farms as Bustos’ is threatened, will enter into force for organic food say.
The standards are much less stringent than those currently in many states, including New Mexico. It would allow large farms to a “bio” label, while in offices or ganic say supporters, antit-hetical on organic farming - practices such as genetic engineering and irradiation of food, when using common Sewage sludge on fields and use of antibiotics in farm animals.
The Organic Food Production Act of 1990, the Secretary-General for Agriculture, a number of federal standards for organic production, processing and handling of food, and a “national list of materials” of banned substances and permitted.
A 15-member National Organic Standards Board was established with a specific mission in the composition. The members were specialists in environmental resources, eco-agricultural and food-processors.
